Often times, I get several questions from people asking me ‘what do possums eat’ and as such, I have decided to dedicate this post to them to let them know what possums like to eat. But before listing all the kinds of foods this wonderful animals eat, let me make it clear that baby possums eat almost the same kind of food other possums eat in the wild, So 
Possums are Omnivores. Omnivores are animals that eat plants and flesh just like we human. So it doesn’t really matter if you are concerned about what Australian or New Zealand possums eat, they are all Omnivores. Wikipedia defines Omnivore /ˈɒmnivɔər/ as a consumption classification for animals that have the capability to obtain energy and nutrients from materials originating from plant and animal origin. Often, omnivores also have the ability to incorporate food sources such as algae, fungi, and bacteria into their diet as well and coincidentally Possums or Opossums also fall under this Classification.
List of Foods That Possums Eat
Opossums eat fruits, snakes (opossums are immune to all types of snake venom, except that of the coral snake), insects, snails, slugs, eggs, mice, rats, fish, frogs, crayfish, and carrion. They also eat small rodents, insects, worms, slugs and snails, frogs and birds including chickens. Additionally, opossums eat vegetables, berries, nuts, fruit, garbage, pet food and bird seed.
SO if you have possums in your garden, they are probably eating your garbage, leaves etc and at night, Opossums might eat insects, frogs etc
